Bauer Impact Drivers

Bauer is Harbor Freight's mid-price cordless line. The brushless impact driver posts big numbers for the money, but the warranty and platform tell a fuller story.

Short answer

A Bauer impact driver is a solid budget buy for occasional DIY work. The 20V brushless 3-speed model (item 58847) is rated at 2,000 in-lbs, 3,200 RPM and 3,750 IPM. The trade-offs are a 90-day warranty listed on Harbor Freight's page, Harbor Freight-only availability, and batteries that do not fit Hercules. If you will use it weekly, Hercules is the better Harbor Freight buy.

Is a Bauer impact driver worth it?

For a homeowner who needs an impact driver a few times a year, the Bauer brushless model is good value. Its rated torque and speed are close to those of name-brand 18V drivers, and Harbor Freight often discounts it with coupons. What you trade away is warranty length, a wide retail network and the longer pro track record that Harbor Freight's own Hercules line is meant to offer.

This page is based on Harbor Freight's published specs and warranty terms plus patterns in owner feedback. We did not test the tools. Harbor Freight changes items and pricing often, so check the current listing before you buy.

Figures are Harbor Freight's own. Torque is measured differently by each brand, so a 2,000 in-lb Bauer and a 2,000 in-lb Milwaukee are not necessarily equal in use. Compare classes, not exact numbers.

Best for: DIYers who want three speeds and real power on a tight budget.

Torque
2,000 in-lbs
Speed
up to 3,200 RPM
Impacts

Weight

The three-speed selector is what makes this model worth the small premium over the brushed version. You can turn it down for cabinet screws and flat-pack furniture, then turn it up for 3-inch deck screws. The brushless motor also stretches battery life, which matters on a platform where the packs are the expensive part.

Strengths

  • High rated torque for the price
  • Three speeds
  • Frequent coupon discounts

Weaknesses

  • 90-day warranty listed on Harbor Freight's page
  • Longer and heavier than pro compact drivers
  • Bare tool only; battery and charger extra
  • Sold only through Harbor Freight

Bauer tools are a Harbor Freight exclusive, so we do not link to Amazon listings for them. Buy in store or on Harbor Freight's site, and keep the receipt for warranty claims.

Bauer warranty: the part to read carefully

Harbor Freight's page for the brushless Bauer driver lists a 90-day warranty from the date of purchase, subject to the limits in the manual. That is short. Name brands in the same class usually offer three years or more, and Harbor Freight's own Hercules brushless tools carry five years.

What that means in practice:

  • Run the tool hard in the first few weeks. Most manufacturing defects show up early.
  • Keep your receipt, or buy with an account so the purchase is on record.
  • Ask at checkout about Harbor Freight's optional extended plan, and decide based on how hard you will use it.
  • Check the battery's warranty separately. Battery terms can differ from tool terms.

The Hercules driver is shorter, lighter, faster and carries a far longer warranty. It costs more, and its batteries cost more. If you will use the driver weekly, or if you are starting from zero, Hercules is the better long-term buy. If you already own Bauer 20V batteries and need a driver for occasional jobs, the Bauer brushless model is the sensible add-on. Full details in our Hercules impact driver guide.

Bauer batteries and platform

Bauer 20V batteries fit Bauer 20V tools only. They do not fit Hercules or any name brand, so pick your Harbor Freight tier carefully before buying several tools. Harbor Freight says the Bauer 20V system has dozens of compatible products, covering the common DIY needs: drills, saws, sanders, lights and some yard tools.

For impact driving, a 4.0 Ah or 5.0 Ah pack gives a better balance of runtime and weight than a small 1.5 or 2.0 Ah pack. Harbor Freight's runtime claim for the brushless driver uses a 5 Ah battery. For general advice on capacities and chargers, see the impact driver battery guide. If you are not committed to a platform yet, read choosing a cordless tool platform first.

How to buy a Bauer impact driver for less

The tool is usually sold bare, so the real cost depends on how you add the battery and charger. A few patterns help:

  1. Watch for battery-plus-tool promotions. Harbor Freight regularly runs offers where buying a battery and charger brings a bare tool free or discounted. These are the best time to start a platform.
  2. Use member and coupon pricing. Harbor Freight's coupons and member deals rotate frequently. Do not pay the full shelf price if you can wait a week or two.
  3. Buy the battery you need, not the cheapest. A 2.0 Ah pack keeps the driver light for indoor work; a 4.0 Ah or larger pack is better for a deck or fence.
  4. Price the alternative honestly. Add the battery and charger cost to the bare tool before comparing with a name-brand kit. Our bare tool vs kit guide shows the math.

Bauer vs name brands for DIY

A Bauer driver competes on price with Ryobi, Skil and Black+Decker. Ryobi's top brushless driver adds an assist mode and a 3-year warranty, and Ryobi's tool range is much larger. Skil's brushless driver is lighter. Black+Decker is easier to find in stores. Bauer's edge is raw rated power per dollar, especially with Harbor Freight coupons.

Safety: wear safety glasses while driving and hearing protection for long sessions. Impact drivers do not control final torque, so finish lug nuts and any bolt with a torque spec using a torque wrench.

Verdict

The Bauer brushless 3-speed impact driver delivers a lot of rated power for the money and suits occasional DIY use. The 90-day warranty is its biggest weakness. If you use an impact driver often or are starting a new platform, spend more on Hercules for the five-year coverage and compact size. If you already run Bauer batteries, the brushless driver is an easy add.

Frequently asked questions

Is Bauer the same as Hercules?

No. Both are Harbor Freight house brands, but they are separate 20V platforms with different batteries. Hercules is the higher, pro-oriented tier with longer warranties. Bauer is the mid-price tier aimed at DIY use.

Who makes Bauer tools?

Bauer is a Harbor Freight brand. Harbor Freight does not publicly name the factories behind each product line, so be wary of claims online that Bauer is a rebadge of a specific name brand.

Can I extend the Bauer warranty?

Harbor Freight has historically sold an optional extended service plan at the register for many tools. Availability and terms change, so ask at checkout and read the plan details before paying for it.

Is the Bauer impact driver good for lag bolts?

For occasional 1/4-inch and 5/16-inch lag screws with pilot holes, the brushless model has the power. For larger lags or many in a row, a bigger battery helps, and for 1/2-inch lags an impact wrench is the right tool. Finish structural bolts with a torque wrench where there is a spec.
